Guess This Fruit

Do you know what these are?

Maybe this will help.

Maybe not.

They are loquats. They grow all over Houston. I have one in a pot. This is the first year we have ever gotten fruit on it. I grew up with one of these trees in my backyard.

When you cut them open, there are a couple of large seeds. It's not a great picture, but this is what they look like:

They are tasty. A little like an apple but with the texture of a grape. But they are hard work. There is not much flesh in one of these.

Most people who have these small, evergreen trees in their yard don't even bother to pick them. My daughter's piano teacher's husband is from Jordan. When he got to Houston, he was shocked to see them growing all over the place. Apparently, they are quite a delicacy where he comes from. Go figure.

I picked what few we had and am eating on them. We didn't get enough to do anything with, but you can make a jelly out of them.

Ever heard of or seen a loquat?

I have never seen or heard about loquats before. I did get the "quats" part right when I was guessing.

We had loquats growing in our backyard growing up, too. We ate them sometimes, but mostly ignored them. Not really my favorite fruit.
