The figs have started coming in at the house in Houston. I'm sure they are ripening at the other house, too, but WE DON'T LIVE THERE YET!!
I like figs just fine, but the real reason we harvest them it to make preserves for my father and father-in-law. They both just love them. Now I have learned that Lar's Aunt Sarah has a fondness for them as well. I pick what is ripe each day, let them sit out overnight to ripen, and then cut the tops and freeze them. When the harvest is over, I make preserves. Yummy!

I can take figs or leave them, but it sounds very cool to be harvesting and preserving your own fruit. :)
Ann says: Figs are so biblical. We know they were eaten during the time of Jesus earthly life. It is always so cool to realize that a food has such a straight connection. I have the beginnings of a fig tree that is a shoot from my Grandfather's farm which was planted in about 1900, and a cutting then grew at my parent's home even now. When we sold it this spring, I decided the connection had to continue, so I brought a bit of the root and some brances. It is now about 2 1/2 feet tall, and looks very healthy.
I hope to pick figs and persere them someday, just like the women before me!
I L-O-V-E figs! My grandparents, on both sides had huge fig trees & I learned to preserve figs by the time I was 12 years old! Then when I married I was delighted to find my in-laws had 2 huge fig trees in their back yard and let me have all I wanted. However, sad to say, since I moved to Houston in '89 I've had NO figs. No room to plant a tree, my parents and grand parents and in-laws have died..no more trees. But let me tell you...I've got Wonderful Memories! Fresh and preserved figs are THE BEST!!! Enjoy
