Want to hear something funny?

I have mentioned before that I hide things in my kids' food to try and get a vegetable in them occasionally. One of the things I do is steam cauliflower and puree it. I then freeze it into ice cubes and put the cubes in a baggy in the freezer. Whenever I make mac and cheese, I throw a couple in. It blends into the sauce and no one is the wiser.

Well, the other day I was making said "white paste" as I like to call it. My daughter comes into the kitchen and says, "Mmm, do I smell macaroni?"

Um, not exactly. : )

Someday, she is going to taste cauliflower for real and say, "This tastes familiar..."

What Were You Doing Nine Years Ago Today?

I was lying in a hospital bed recovering from the surgical delivery of my sweetness baby girl.

Happy Birthday, my Sweetness. You have added such joy to all our lives.

If you want to know Where Babies Come From, you can read about it here.

You may remember that a little over a year ago we spent some time in California getting Beloved Nephew married off.

Well, time passes and things change. Last Friday that happy couple turned into a happy family.

She has a beautiful name that I won't share with you here. ; ) I'll come up with a blog name for her soon. I'm sure you'll be hearing lots about her in the months to come. (Provided I start posting again.) *sigh*

Little Lady

So I made mac and cheese for lunch the other day. I added a little too much milk and it was kind of runny. My girl was having trouble getting the last few noodles out of the soupy mess. I told her to just pick up her plate and scoop it into her mouth.

She looked at me and said, "Mommy, I am a lady and ladies don't do that."

Can you see my smile from there?

The Value of Life

I have a very tender hearted little girl. She loves every living thing. And while I think most kids love the furry things, she has a special affection for flies. Yes, flies. They seem to like her, too, which can sometimes be a little unsettling for me. She catches the ones that get in the house and lets them go outside. She wants everyone to have a chance at a good life.

The other day she was playing on the Slip n' Slide. One time when she got to the end of the slide, she noticed a fly upside down in the water. She picked it up and discovered it was still alive, but too wet to fly. She brought him into the house to let him dry out. Here is said fly.

He could crawl all over her hands, but he couldn't fly. As she was playing with him, she decided that he needed a nice place to recuperate. Welcome to rehab fly style.
I don't know if you can tell from the picture, but our fly had a small tree, a pony, a seesaw, and a room of his own. That little box on the right held a bed complete with a Teddy bear and half a pecan shell for a little cubby hole in case he needed some privacy.

All of this work was for naught. Our fly dried off and flew away about the time it was finished. At least, he got a second chance at life. She was content in knowing that her skills as a fly nurse were sufficient for his needs.

Point of View

We were at church the other night for play rehearsal for my daughter. We got there a little early and no one was there yet. The church was locked. We decided to walk around and explore. I have shared here that we recently left our church of 20 years. After some hopping around, we decided to settle here until we find our new country home. We aren't very familiar with the building, so we decided to go check it out while we waited for everyone to arrive.

We walked around the back of the sanctuary and found a little play ground and the "other" side of the church that no one really ever uses. There was a matching set of entry doors on that side. The girl asked if she could open the doors. I said sure, but I'm sure they are locked. They weren't.

Immediately an alarm went off. Not only was the siren sounding, but this man's voice was shouting something about "emergency, burglary in progress" or something equally threatening. We walked back around to the front of the church and waited for whomever was going to show up to arrest us.

The security guard and a frantic elder were first. Then the children's activity director. The people with the appropriate keys to turn the mess off arrived and things started to quiet down. The police didn't arrive until after we were in the sanctuary. Very exciting indeed.

When we got home, the girl was recounting the events to her daddy. She said, "I pulled on the doors and they opened! Do you know what happened next?"

Daddy said, "Did you set the alarm off?"

"NO," she said, "We set the alarm ON?"

It's all in how you look at it, I guess.
